Hello crafty friends,
I love a good craft kit on a rainy Sunday afternoon, don't you? As you know, I make jewellery craft kits, so I can share my love of making jewellery and hopefully spread the joy. But I'm certainly not the only one making and selling amazing quality craft kits in the UK. There is so much talent out there, ready for us to explore and get making all sorts of wonderful things! I have a wishlist of kits I want to buy, especially now that winter is coming. I'm looking forward to cosy afternoons indoors, crafting away.
I wanted to share some of my finds with my crafty readers, who might be looking for a new craft, a gift for a crafty friend, or something special to make for a loved one. I hope this list inspires you!
1. Japanese Boromono Bag Kit
It's strange for me to start with a sewing kit, because I never sew, but this Japanese technique is very different - wonky stitches are actually encouraged!!!
I bought this kit from Japan Crafts (based in Birmingham) recently, as a gift for my mum. She absolutely loved it and is instantly addicted to Boromono! Japan Crafts have 3 bag kits at the time of writing this post, and plenty of samplers to learn the technique.
2. Beaded Flower Kit
This beaded flower kit with wildflowers is on my wishlist. A permanent flower display that never dies is just what I need! This kit is made by The Beadology Shop, and they have a wide selection of beaded flower kits, starting at £10, which I think is a great price to try something new.
3. Mirror Mosaic Kit
I've been wanting to try a mosaic kit for a while now. There is a lot of choice on the handmade market, but Moonrise Mosaic's kits really stand out to me for their variety and quality. I love that they make kits for things that can be used, like mirrors, photo frames and coasters. They also have a nice collection of hanging ornament kits.
4. Clay At Home Kit
The kit in the pic, from Jasmine Pottery Studio, is the exact one I bought for a date night - it's for two people, and has PLENTY of clay in it, as well as tools and paint. We've had more than one fun crafting evening with it. I really like that they sell kits for two and even three people, so it can be a social evening as well. I made this little ring holder the first time we used it, and I love it:
5. DIY Basketry Kit
Wonder Weaver Design makes weaving kits, if you're looking for something a bit different. I've got this little basket on my wishlist, because pretty little containers are something I can never have enough of! I'm a fan of making items that are useful, as well as decorative, so this is right up my street.
6. Embossed Metal Picture Frame
Caroline at Pewter Concepts makes metal embossing kits, which I can't wait to try! She also does workshops in and around Derbyshire, and you might find her at a craft market in those areas, too. I haven't managed to attend one of her workshops yet, but either a workshop or a kit is definitely on my to do list - I love working with metal, and I'm keen to learn a new technique. If you want to have a go, Caroline has some lovely kits for sale on her website.
7. Wire Crystal Tree
The Weeping Tree makes gorgeous crystal trees, suncatchers and other handmade decor items. They just have this one kit for making your own crystal tree, with a choice of semi-precious stones. I included this kit, because I've enjoyed making my own crystal trees, so it was a bonus to find this.
8. Flower Quilling Kit
I went through a quilling phase, and definitely wish I'd bought a kit - these quilled flowers look so lovely! If you're into paper crafts, then this is the kit for you. Tilly Viktor sells a good variety of quilling kits for beginners and experienced quillers, as well as quilling paper and tools. The designs are amazing, and will make you look like an expert quiller, even if you've never done it before.
9. Indian Block Printing Kit
The Indian Block Print Co. has it all on their website! I love browsing through all their kits, printing blocks and video tutorials. They even run workshops in Oxfordshire, and have a subscription box. Their entire website is on my wishlist, because I just can't choose which kit to buy! I might have to buy a few - maybe something Christmas themed? Honestly, take a look at their amazing website, and get inspired!
10. Silk Painting Suncatcher Kit
I'm not confident with painting, but this kit looks like it will be such a relaxing craft to do, and the end result looks really effective when it's hung at a window. Wild Bud Design sells a few of these silk painting suncatchers with floral themes, and they're all beautiful. I'm getting this one for my Gran for Christmas, because she wants to try a new craft and she loves snow drops... OK, I literally just ordered it, and a hair scrunchie for myself. This list is getting expensive for me, haha.
11. Beginner Whittling Fox Kit
I recently bought some whittling blanks from LP Design as a gift, but I do want to have a go at whittling myself, and this fox is so cute! LP Design sell a range of whittling kits and tools in their Etsy shop, and do videos to go along with their kits. I read through their reviews before purchasing, and particularly love this one, which says alot about them: "This shop went above and beyond. My father is blind and they sent a sample already whittled so my father can recreate by touch. Thank you so so much!" Isn't that just the kind of personal service we love from handmade businesses?
12. Beginner Chainmail Bracelet
I'm finishing off this list with one of my own kits - my best seller: byzantine chainmail bracelet. You can get it either in silver-filled (100 times more silver than silver plated) or bronze. As it happens, this was the first chainmail design that I tried, so I know for sure that you can make this gorgeous bracelet, even if you've never made anything like it before. Bonus - it looks equally fab on men and women!
So, which kit has caught your eye? I hope these lovely crafts inspire you to try something new. I know there are plenty of other craft kits out there, so if you have enjoyed a craft kit in the past, let me know and I'll add it to my Pinterest board and spread the word! The criteria is simple: the kit must have been made by a small handmade business, and of course it must be good quality. It should also be a kit for adults. The handmade business doesn't have to be in the UK. If you want to share a kit you have loved, drop me an email at ruth@macawcraft.co.uk.
